Patents, Utility Models
 1. PAJ Search
  • PAJ is English abstracts of unexamined patent applications published in Japan
  • PAJ is searchable by: 
           –Free keywords
           –Publication date
           –IPC
           –Application / Publication / Registration / Appeal number
  • Available data: as from 1976
  • Legal status and machine translation are available for the PAJ published as from 1993.

2. Patent & Utility Model Gazette DB

  • All patent and utility model gazettes can be retrieved with document numbers except for Application Number like:
          –Publication number
          –Registration number, etc.
         –NOT Application number
  • lPAJ is displayed for Publication of Unexamined Patent Applications firstly.
  • Machine translation is also available forthe gazettes, which issued on CD-ROMs since 1993.

3. Patent & Utility Model (document number) Concordance
  •  Numbers in different stages of one application are concerned with each other and these contents are displayed.
         –e.g. Registration number and publication number can be referred from application number.
  • Application number can be used for this service.
  • lPAJ and Machine Translation are also available. 
 4. Patent Map Guidance
  • FI/F-term classification can be retrieved.
  • “FI” is organized in hierarchical structure, further subdivided the IPC.
  • “F-term” is organized for particular technological field to improve a search efficiency from multiple viewpoints; purpose, usage, structure, operation, etc.

5. FI/F-term Search

>>  All the Patent & Utility model gazettes and PAJ can be searched with the FI/F-term that is a
unique patent classification developed by subdividing, expanding or re-organizing the IPC
in the JPO.

Example of F-term: 4B027 FB21

>> Search range is from 1885 to the latest.

>> Machine Translation is available for the gazettes published after 1993.

Trademark applications and registered trademarks in Japan can be searched by keywords corresponding to the items below.

 2. Japanese Figure Trademarks
>>Trademark applications and registered trademarks in Japan can be searched by element/part of figure in trademarks.
>> The Vienna classification has been used for examination since April 1, 2004 in the JPO.

>>The Vienna Classification constitutes a hierarchical system that proceeds from the general to the particular. And dividing all figurative elements into categories, divisions  and sections.

>>Figure term can be searched in “Figure term list”.
3. Japanese Well-Known Trademarks  
>>Defensive marks and trademarks recognized as “well-known trademarks” in decisions on opposition, appeal/trial decisions or court decisions can be searched by keyword.
>>Well-known trademarks formed by figure  can be displayed as well.
>> All the items stored in this database can be displayed by clicking “All Documents List”.
>>Coverage is not complete; regularly updated every three months.
4. List of Goods and Services
>> In this service, you can retrieve list of goods and services (the 8th and 9th edition of the Nice Classification) by keywords, class and similar-group code.
>> Concordance between goods (or services) and classes (or similar- group code) can be referred on the list.
>> Similar-group code presumes similarity among goods and services, but the scope is not conclusive.

>> Design Gazette Database

  - A Design Gazette (1889) and a Publication of a Disagreed Consultation on Design Application      (1999) are available.


  - Computer translation is available for the gazettes issued (on CD- ROM) after 2000 as well.
   
Ⅲ. Design  - Outline of the Design Law  
 
             Unlike Japanese patent system, every design application should be examined without request for examination, and if none of the reasons for refusal is found, it will be registered after payment of registration fee. Then Design Gazette is issued.
